What is natural?

The term “natural” is not as strictly regulated in its application in the food and cosmetic industry. Generally it applies to ingredients or products that are not artificial, and do not contain any chemicals or hormones.

At Rooted in Africa, because organic certification is an expensive process in Africa for small farmers, we apply a strict definition to our use of the term “natural.” The ingredients in our clients’ products are farmed on sustainable farms not exposed to pesticides or insecticides or are wild-crafted. Wild-crafting is strictly regulated by the South African government to ensure sustainability and environmental consciousness.

Many of our clients’ products are 100% natural. What that means is all the ingredients occur naturally and have not been modified or altered in any way. Some of our clients’ products are as close to 100% natural as possible, and what that means is a small percentage of the ingredients are derived from natural products, but not in their true natural form. This is usually for stability purposes. For example, Vitamin E (Tocopherol Acetate – a stabilized form of Vitamin E) No harmful chemicals are ever used in any of our clients’ products.
